Should Da Vinci Code be read in Catholic high school?

My son has just been told his English Class is to read the Da Vinci Code. He attends a Catholic High School. My husband and I are not happy with this announcement. Can you help us with a response as to why the class should not read this book. Keeping in mind this is a Literature assignment, and not a Religion class assignment, and doubtful the Catholic Faith would be defended.
