What is "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" and why is it unforgivable?

I would like to know more about the unforgiveable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. One of our youth group leaders last night gave an anwer to a question from one of the kids that essentially equated that sin with despair. That answer did not sound quite right to me - or at least it is inadequate. Could you provide some more insight? Thanks.
