Red face What is this?

My boyfriend gave me a keychain when he came back from the Philippines. I was wondering what it is, exactly. He couldn't explain it in English and I'd like to know whether it has any special meaning. Is that Mary or a different saint? Can anyone tell me what this is?

Yes, on the front, that definitely looks like it's Mary in the middle. On the back, it's the same symbol that's on the back of a Miraculous Medal. However, even though I don't know Italian, it dosn't seem to have the prayer that is usually on a Miraculus Medal.

I was pretty much thinking it was one too. But the inscription dosn't appear to be the Miraculous Medal prayer to me and I don't even know Italian. Still, I can't quite make out what it does say.

Cool Re: What is this?

The medal may have been manufactured in Italy, but the language is Latin:

Regina sine labe originali concepta O.P.N. [Ora Pro Nobis]
Queen conceived without original sin [Pray For Us]

True - it's obviously intended to be a Miraculous Medal, but is it close enough to the Miraculous Medal prayer ("Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee") though?

One clue is that the date 1830 will always be inscribed at Mary's feet on a Miraculous Medal.

I got you. It's just a variation on the prayer. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Well, that was cleared up quickly! Thanks.

So... umm... forgive my ignorance here... What's the purpose of a Miraculous Medal? Does it go along with some devotion to Mary that I should know? Do I just keep it with me as a statement of faith? Is its purpose to remind me of Mary's perpetual virginity?

I'm new to all this. I'm quite happy to do what the Church tells me to do, but I like being able to ask "why?"

There is a whole story surounding the origins of the medal itself. Check it out for yourself. http://www.marys-touch.com/Saints/medal/medal.htm

It's for alot of purposes. Yes, it's as a statement of faith. But, over the years, there have been alot of miracles attributed to it. That's why it's called the Miraculous Medal. The prayer is also a lovely prayer. I say it often because I like it so much.

Mother Theresa would often give the medal out to people she would meet. Also, Fr. Maximillian Kolbe also had love for the medal as well.
