Default Staying Logged in, Forum Usage, and Cookies

As a security feature, CAF will automatically log out your account if it does not see any activity for 15 minutes. Reading a long thread or composing a long post often takes more than 15 minutes.

You can bypass this security feature. To log in to CAF and stay logged in, simply check the "Remember Me" checkbox next to the password field as you log in. Every time you visit the forums, the computer will "remember" you and automatically log you in.

To keep someone from using your member account on your computer, just "log out" of the forum when you are done. (But when you return, you will have to log in to the forum again.) If you are accessing the forum from a private home computer, there may be no need to log out. NOTE: Closing your browser does not log you out! Subsequent users of that computer will be able to access your account.

HOW IT WORKS
To accomplish the above, the forum uses cookies! Cookies are tiny files that contain your general forum settings and log-in information saved to your computer. Cookies also help us determine if you are online or not. If you have cookies enabled in your browser for this forum, you will not be logged out.

NOTE: We do not track cookies. We do not record cookie data. We do not use cookies in any manner except as described above.

ENABLING COOKIES
Unfortunately, some Internet users disable cookies in their browsers. Allowing your browser to accept cookies from us will make your forum experience much more enjoyable. Your preferred settings will be remembered. You don't have to log on when you return to the forum. And cookies also prevent you from being logged off inadvertently.

For optimal forum usage, be sure you have cookies enabled in your browser.

For example, in IE 6, click:
Tools > Internet Options > Privacy (tab)
----------------------------
To tweak your general cookie settings:
1 - click "Advanced..." in the "Settings" group.
2 - Check "Override automatic cookie handling" if necessary.
3 - Set "First-party Cookies" to "Accept"
4 - Leave "Third-party cookies" at "Block"
5 - Check "Always allow session cookies"
When you're done, click OK.

Alternatively, you can set catholic.com as "SAFE" for cookies.
On the Privacy tab, click Edit in the "Web Sites" group to change cookie handling on a site-by-site basis.
Enter catholic.com in the address field and click "Allow" and then "OK" to allow cookies.

FAILURE MODES
Even if you click "Remember Me" during login, there are various ways to inadvertently disable, override, or bypass "Remember Me" functionality:
  1. Use a different browser or computer. Your "Remember Me" setting is specific to your computer and browser.
  2. Somebody used your computer/browser and clicked "Log Out" without telling you.
  3. You changed your security setting to disable cookies from CAF
  4. You changed firewall setting.
  5. Some spyware programs clean such things as "Remember Me" settings.
  6. Setting your browser to delete all cookies when you close your browser

Default Re: Cookies and Forum Usage

When I read the response, well somewhat read it. I thought blah blah blah..... too confusing to me.. the same thing happens to me when I log on.. I don't know why. I even had to post a new password... quite a feat for me.. to figure that one out. LOL. anyways, I wrote the new password on the calendar next to my computer and just type it in the next time I want to post something. A pain in the neck, but I am so computer illiterate, i don't even care! I just love this forum and if I really need to say something, the extra time is ok by me! see you soon. (hopefully) Mary
