When John Paul II was elected, some people wondered why an American Cardinal was not one of the "possibles." Supposedly, a Vatican official joked that the reason was that if an American was elected, the world would think that the CIA had something to do with it.

Cardinal George from Chicago is very good, as is Cardinal Szoka (from Detroit, now in the Vatican)
But there is very little chance an American Cardinal will be chosen. It would not matter how good the man was, there is too much political baggage assoicated with being an American.
As Richard stated, there would be many would wonder if the CIA did it (like the Holy Spirt works out of Langley )
It would also be seen as a validation of the poor state of the Church in the US.

I don't know the individual American cardinals. Many of them are unilingual. Many people are afraid that an American cardinal will not be accepted across the world.
Of the Canadian cardinals I think Cardinal Ambrozic is strong. He holds the line. The heterodox don't like him at all. The trouble is that he is fairly old (78) and is a shy man.
I think if people are worried about the direction of the Americas, they may like some of the Latin American cardinals. The Cuban cardinal is perfectly poised to influence the direction of the Americas. Also, he has good experience with youth groups, a good background, and much to say about materialism. He is neither communisit nor capitalist.
Some people say that communism is no longer an issue. I disagree. Our Blessed Mother spoke about the fall of Russia. Communism is still alive and well in Asia and in Cuba. Once Cuba falls...do the math.

Alive and well, but impotent, and will always be such from now on. We now trade with China and Vietnam and should do the same with Cuba. But, their ideologies are things of the past.

Tell that to people who still live under the yoke of communism.

The Major Archbishop of the Ukrainians, Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, is an American citizen. He moved here as a boy and lived for many years here, getting ordained a Priest in Stamford. He is papabile.

This reminds me of a joke my father the language teacher used to tell.
What do you call a person who speaks two languages? Bilingual.
What do you call a person who speaks three languages? Trilingual.
What do you call a person who speaks more than three languages? Multilingual.
What do you call a person who speaks one language? American!

Re: There arenīt any american cardinal good?
After hearing this remark on TV.........maybe some of our very liberal cardinals will wake up and get back to the teachings of the Catholic church.
Pray for the safety of all pilgrims in Rome.
