Anyway, we should be more productive right now discussing more religious matters, as the cardinals are about to enter into the conclave.
God bless.

You know, the cardinals just could be having a toga party tonight!

Actually, before he left for Rome, Cardinal George reminded the congregation at the cathedral that he will be the first native Chicagoan to vote in a papal election.... and that he plans to do us proud by upholding our reputation of voting more than once!

Couldn't do what better? Talk? Possibly so. The Cardinals are well educated, erudite men

Sure. I agree. It's just a good picture. I don't see any "posing" going on here. Maybe chicago should take a Rorschach ink blot test.

I don't think he was saying that they were posing, just that the the positions and facial expressions they have are amusingly contrasting with one another.
C'mon people, sit down with a pint and enjoy a good laugh. As another poster noted, God DID create the platypus

My use of the word "pose" ought not to be taken to a literalist sense of "striking a pose" as if for intentional effect of public presentation. The subjects are, simply, captured by photography in particular "postures", thus they are (by their very gestures and expressions) "posed" and "posing", albeit accidentally to the picture.
I bet that they'd get a chuckle out of this thread, BTW!

Re: Crazy Cast of Cardinals
I suppose that part of the inherant humor of the photo is also how it somehow encapsulates something of the personality (or stereotypes) of each of these prelates. Seeing as how they are all Americans to whom most here can readily relate, it's interesting to see them interacting in such an informal way as here depicted. This leads one to imagine just how that conversation may have been playing out.
You have Cardinal George who seems to be ethereal and talking over everybody's head as the intellectual leader of the U.S. heirarchy. Cardinal Rigali who is often seen as somewhat serious and stern with his low baritone and all, is intently and almost conflictedly staring, critiquing or trying to grasp what's being spoken. The kindly Cardinal McCarrick is just smiling away. And Cardinal Mahoney, well just looking a little sick or something with sagging muscles to show his age, yet here thinly towering over the rest in his appearing stature.
There's something ironically "true" about that depiction and the interplay which seems to be going on, even if it was not (and perhaps all the more so if it was not compositionally) intended. In that lies a certain inteligent humor.
Now I'm done 'splainin', Ricky!

Re: Crazy Cast of Cardinals
Pious does not mean always serious. Shees...some people need to have a good belly laugh--there's nothing disrespectful here. Our wonderful Pope has died, we look with hope and joy to the next successor of Peter--Check out Psalms 126 and remember Ecc. 3:4 "...a time to weep, a time to laugh..." lighten up...or at least take off that hair shirt.

You're starting to put on some weight there, Justin. (I wonder if I press his belly, will he giggle like the pillsbury dough boy? hmm...)
