I have read a number of his books, interviews and documents, all very clear and precise.

I've never heard Protestants described as cafeteria catholics before. Pretty neat. Far more inclusive terminology than usual.

I would love to see Catholicsm get back to more orthodox teachings (i.e. drop a bunch of superfluous doctrines). There would be less to pick and choose from cafeteria-style .

Despite his reputation as a reactionary or “the enforcer”, Benny 16 is actually a thoughtful insightful man. There is nothing knee-jerk about him AFAIK

While he may not be everything that middle-of-the-road Catholics like me would want it was a smart choice.

PJ2 will of course be a tough act to follow but at 78 he is probably wise enough not to try and to be his own man

Personally I would have thought that a younger man might have been a better choice but it wasn’t my call

I don't think that's true. He's been involved in ecumenical dialogue for years. I think he understands Protestantism a lot better than JPII did.

I meant that the protestants may pick up some nominal and cafeteria catholics who fall away as a result of the changes to a more orthodox Church under HH Pope Benedict XVI. But, they were not truely Catholic in their beliefs anyway.

God Bless.

It is obvious that the Holy Spirit was involved in the election of Pope Bennedict XVI.

The inquirer aren´t important, the important is the new Pope´s magisterium, we hope a lot.
