Re: Drop-side cribs...
If you're worried and not covered by the recall, get a square bracket/brace and a few screws to secure the side(s) at the bottom, and even at the top if you want.
Like this:

My personal, unprofessional assessment is that the plastic pieces are inadequate in households where furniture sees a lot of use or abuse, and it would be overkill to ban all drop side cribs regardless of the slide mechanism.
That's why I'm not worried about our crib. I put it together myself, I know it is assembled properly, and I know its going to be fine at our minimal crib use.

Re: Drop-side cribs...
For anyone concerned they may not be able to reach into a stationary side crib, I read that the stationary ones are made lower anyway. I know our mini crib (the same one Stratus has) is very low, and I've never had any problems with it.

Re: Drop-side cribs...
Would the Arms Reach Co-Sleepers count as a drop side crib??
http://www.armsreach.com/index.php?m...Path=cPath=3_1
I am thinking of getting one of these and was wondering if I should be concerned about it?
Thanks

Re: Drop-side cribs...
I did not buy a drop-side crib and I have to say it was because I was worried about something like that. Honestly, when devices have more moving parts that's more parts that can break and cause an issue. I figured a solid, sturdy, one-piece crib would be safest, that just made the most mechanical sense to me. I'm only 5'2" but if bending over a little bit more is all I have to do, I'm cool with that.
Are they offering refunds to people who have the drop-side cribs? I didn't read the whole article

Re: Drop-side cribs...
Owners of the recalled cribs can receive a free repair/modification kit to turn it into a stationary side crib.

Re: Drop-side cribs...
We have one, but it gets such little use that it is in very good shape. I don't think that my second daughter has ever slept in it, and I haven't bothered to assemble it for the new baby.

Re: Drop-side cribs...
I own a dropside and we still use it. It's Bambino brand or something like that. I am confused as to whether it's just the Storknet (orwhatever brand it was) that is being recalled, or if they mean for everyone to get rid of all dropside cribs...

Those are the ones that have been recalled. But there are general questions about whether drop-side cribs are really safe. Having a drop-side is very difficult to do without really weakening the structure of the crib.

Re: Drop-side cribs...
Thanks StratusRose
My question probably shows my inexperience. Hopefully all that will change with this first baby!

Re: Drop-side cribs...
We have one tho we haven't ever put it up for this baby who sleeps with us. With baby before this one, we completely removed the drop side section and pushed it up against the bed to use as a side sleeper. It basicly extended our bed for baby. I've used the drop side when they were newborns because it was easier on my sore back to get baby in and out. No we won't be getting rid of the rarely used one we have. We certainly won't be buying a newer one.

Re: Drop-side cribs...
I have one of the recalled Storkcraft cribs and called the company to get more information. According to their rep the main problem seems in installing the crib side wrong, or assembling and using the crib without all the parts. That's why they are doing the recall. If your crib was assembled per the instructions and the hardware is in good condition they told me we had nothing to worry about. My 2 month old daughter is sleeping in hers right now. I intend to order the recall kit, but I don't plan on using it unless the hardware becomes a problem. (Cue baby police to come and get me now). Of course she sleeping in my old crib when we visit my mom anyway and it's thirty years old, so I should probably have been hauled off by now anyway.
I figure if my sister and I both survived dropside cribs, the munchkin can too.
