Default Differences between Benedictine, Carmelite, Dominican and Franciscan Spiritualities

I've always been curious about the differences and similarities between Benedictine, Carmelite, Dominican and Franciscan spiritualities/charisms. What are the differences? What does one emphasize more than the other? In what ways are they similar?

Thank you for your help.

I'm wondering the same thing myself - part of discernment, I'm trying to find out as much as I can about different charisms of different communities. Could I add Augustinians, Jesuits, any other order that anyone's involved in and would like to share? Thanks for the help!
God bless

Hey Matthew!

When I researching another post, I found this site, which has a big section on spirituality, including information about each charism.

May God bless you on your spiritual journey!

Probably hugely oversimplified, but here are my impressions:
  • Benedictines Their motto, "Ora et Labora" (Work and Prayer), shows the importance they place on including both in the spiritual life.
  • Carmelites emphasis on contemplative prayer, detachment from all that is not God (see the writings of Saints John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila)
  • Dominicans more emphasis on study and teaching (O.P. = Order of Preachers); a more studious approach to spirituality than some of the other orders. Big fans of the Rosary, which is said to have been given by Mary to their founder (Saint Dominic).
  • Franciscans Embrace "Lady Poverty" in imitation of the poverty of Christ.
