http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-10849211

Not sure if this has already been discussed.

The article didn't mention this so maybe someone else knows, but how do they (or we) know that these are from St. John the Baptist?

Good question. I'm very leery of such claims. It smacks of claiming to have a piece of wood from one of the rungs of Jacob's ladder.

They can verify it through DNA if they already have a relic of St. John?

Or they can carbon date the bones. Carbon dating won't necessarily prove it, but it can disprove it.

This one has a little bit more information. I'm just trying to figure out if there was some sort legend that his bones were move there and just never found or if on the marble case it was labeled St. John the Baptist. I haven't been able to find anything that says why they know or think they know that these belong to him. I'm not questioning the validity, just trying to figure out how they know.

Lot of circumstantial and anecdotal information but no evidence these are the bones of St. John the Baptist. Think I'll wait a bit before I jump on this wagon.

If these truly are his bones - should they be in the Vatican, or at that local Church?

That's really sweet!

I was wondering how they came to this conclusion, but I assumed that there was some texts or indications in the Bible as to the location, or text on the container.

Although this is impressive, I saw part of the skull of John the Baptist at San Silvestro, a church in Rome. While nobody can be 100% certain that it is the actual part of the skull, it does have a convincing lineage and accounts dating back to 453 AD and is just as convincing as this clip. It's worth checking out if you're ever in Rome!!
