"Offer it up"?

OK, I do speak English and understand what saying "offer it up" means, but what dsoes it actually mean spiritually? I keep hearing that "offering up" troubles/sorrows/etc is a good thing. BUT I can't get my head wrapped around it. How do I offer up to God?
When I met with my priest about something he said an excellent thing for me to do for Lent was to "offer up" some things that I am working through every day. I just need a little help. I may post this in the apologetics group, too.
