Default Eyes to See May/June 2011 mediocre art?

In “Everyday Wine” (May-June 2011 ), Michael shows art he describes as kitschy, too-perfect, stereotyped art,

I am thinking…
I can’t help my attachments to this mediocre art, (if indeed it is).
It filled the little book I received 50 years ago.
Whenever I see it again,
It reminds me of when I was six and believed with my whole heart.
Those devotions spring to life…
The comfort returns,
The intimacy,
The excitement,
The joy…
I am about to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.
Or I just have.

It melts my heart.

Even though it is mediocre art,
To me it’s monumental.

On the other hand, I would like to understand iconography better.
I need to know more so I can better appreciate it.
Can Michel help me with that?

Hi,

You may wish to read one of Michael's Schrauzer's Eyes to See columns on iconography:

Driven to Abstraction

A Sign of Him to Come

Cool Re: Eyes to See May/June 2011 mediocre art?

Hey Lovincatholic, nice poem.

To my mind several of the great assumptions about the function of visual art for the individual and within society shoot past the key. The key of dreams and the primary language of thought. I am not referring to conditioned, schooled, trained full sentence thinking. I am speaking of the un-translated, the raw language of our minds, the flash of images when we suddenly just ‘get’ something. That primal language is the source of artistic inspiration, and the visceral place where a viewer ‘gets’ it… or not. Personally I do not understand why so many people do not seem to get this.
