I'm the OP on a thread. i sent a message to the mods through the Report a Post from my own OP requesting that the thread be locked. is this the right way to do it? if not, what is? thanks

I think Report Post is supposed to be used for a post or thread that is problematic in some way. You didn't say whether that was the case for your thread.

Otherwise, I think the preferred way to approach this would be to PM the moderator of that forum and request closure, along with the reason for your request. I'm not aware of any rule that OP's have a right to close threads whenever they choose; keep in mind that others may have invested quite a bit of time and effort discussing aspects of the topic in the thread, so it may not be fair to them to cut off their discussion without a good reason. Regardless, the staff will make the decision.
