Default When Was The Last Time You Heard A Sermon On Hell ?

Do you think Hell should be preached from the pulpit every once in a while ?

Have you ever heard a sermon on Hell at Mass ?

How much do you know about Hell ?

Yes. But our priest is FSSP and doesn't avoid unpopular, 'oldfashioned' topics.

While I attended NO - I don't think I've heard much. Maybe twice in 10 years or so. Not sure.

I haven't heard one yet, but since I too attend an FSSP parish and they are not afraid to speak on unpopular topics, I know one is coming.

I have heard Hell preached about once on an Ash Wednesday mass. I'm sure the priest knew that Ash Wednesday is the one day when everyone goes to church, even those who never go. Therefore, it's the best day to do it, especially considering it is the start of Lent.

Personally, I think Hell should be preached about once in a while, as long as the sermon is also centered reminding us of God's mercy.

Maybe some humor could be used by the priest such as a quote from Dirty Harry "do you feel lucky" Like, sure God is merciful but how lucky do you feel by jeapordizing your soul with sin? or something like that. That way people aren't terrified but still get the point.

We get a lot on martyrdom too. Father is quite upbeat about life and, all but likes to reminds us that we live in difficult times and that there is a possibility some of us will shed blood for the faith. He mentions the devil too, to keep us on our toes.

BINDING THE SHEPHERD’S MOUTHS

In Scripture, God generally purifies His people in two ways: by making them leaderless and/or handing them over to their enemies. St. Gregory the Great, speaking of the Shepherds of the Church, wrote:

I will make your tongue cleave to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be dumb and unable to reprove them, for they are a rebellious house. He clearly means this: the word of preaching will be taken away from you because as long as this people irritates me by their deeds, they are unworthy to hear the exhortation of truth. It is not easy to know for whose sinfulness the preacher’s word is withheld, but it is indisputable that the shepherd’s silence, while often injurious to himself, will always harm his flock. —St. Gregory the Great, Homily, Liturgy of the Hours, Vol IV, p. 368 (cf. webcast Laborers are Few)

In alll the churches I've attended, I've likely heard ONE sermon on the subject of Hell.

Once. Decades ago. It was Father Zak, who pulled NO punches.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Father Zak. The enemy hates him.

Or they're just afraid the parishioners will leave one by one.

We had one this morning. Our priest gets a little old school about once a month.

I don't hear much about "the afterlife" generally. I imagine that Fr's just don't want to creep everybody out.

I heard much more about Hell (and Heaven) when I was a Protestant.

I think it would be good to preach on every once in a while. Right now our parish is without a regular priest tho.

I can't say that I have ever heard a sermon on hell at Mass, nor can I remember the last time I heard one at a non-Catholic gathering.

I'm like most people. I know enough about hell to hope I don't go there.

As the one and only topic of the sermon, no. As a part of a sermon, many times. The story of the wheat and tares, for example.

It is only right that our priests remind us what our options are. (hell, heaven). And, to remind us of the wonderful Sacrament of Reconciliation which is not used as often as it should be.

Heard hell mentioned once in a sermon by a DEACON, never once from a priest. I did, however, hear about hell daily from the nuns I had in school. They were great at scaring the hell out of us!!!
