Here is the link to Jimmy Akin's comments: http://www.jimmyakin.org/2005/08/res....html#comments
and a pertinent quote:

For my money, as someone who has been repeatedly misquoted by the press in an attempt to whip up controversy, if someone comes out and says that they were misquoted, that they don't support the sentiments the press conveyed, and that they're sorry that they became an occasion of offense then we owe them the benefit of the doubt. The burden of proof at that point is on those would say that the press got ir right.

I tend to agree, and am dropping it unless something else develops.

They were not misquoted. They were not mistranslated. They made silly statements about the Pope and about the Catholic Church.
Now they have recanted. Therefore they deserve a second chance, particularly as much of this WYD will be about homecoming for non-Catholics. However, they should not have given the justification that they were taken out of context. They were taken on the basis of their very own words, and all of their words.

Here are some excerpts:
What is being Christian to you? For me Christianity is being a follower of Christ, simply that. We do not want to be the voice of the Church or anything like that.
Have you formed any opinion about abortion or euthanasia? Yes, but these are not the only things which matter to us. There is chit-chat roasted to well-done on those subjects while, for others, they are of no consequence. But it is not that the band has such-and-such a position on the matter; each one thinks what he wants. And those are very timely subjects, very open to any type of opinion.
And then there was the comment that the Pope was more political figure than spiritual. I can't find the original link.

In the interview granted during their first visit to Chile, the band said, “Personally, we don’t think the Pope is God’s representative on earth. Jesus came to do away with any intermediary between God and man, and therefore we have a direct relationship with Him.”
“To me the Pope’s strength is more political than spiritual,” said vocalist and band leader Ulises Eyherabide. “This Pope, who is so orthodox, so rigid and not very ecumenical in eyes of some, could turn out to be a surprise because of how he might be forced to change due to political situations from which he cannot escape.” “Replacing John Paul II obviously has more of a political than a spiritual significance,” he added.

I think this is what your referring to.
