Default Coverage of WYD

How do you think the media is covering WYD? Fox web has a little story and one picture of the pope.

I haven't seen it anywhere other than EWTN. Disappointing.

There was a very brief report on my local evening news showing the pope speaking from the bow of the ship and commenting on his 'conservative' stand on issues.

WYD isn't really not a hard news story.

Its certainly important to those who are there, and their families at home, but unless something huge happens at the event, it isn't really "news", similar to the recent Boy Scout Jamboree, which unfortunately made the news this year.

How much coverage do the Baptist conventions get, let alone the Lutheran and other protestant denomination 'big events'???

Did you really expect WYD to get secular media attention, considering who owns/controls the outlets?

None, unless there is a big vote of the ministers coming down on the issue of gay rights or something like that.

The fact that there isn't much news on about the WYD, is certainly good news.

I saw a report yesterday (Japan time) on BBC World News. It was before the Pope arrived so I guess they didn't have much to report on. However, rather than focusing on the young people there, they focused on how many people disagree with Catholic teaching on sexual issues. They showed a few pictures of young people with various national flags but spent the most time on a young woman handing our condoms to people passing by.

They were very critical of the Pope and really gave a totally biased report.

I haven't seen much yet, except for EWTN's detailed coverage.

There was a brief mention of WYD on CNN's Situation Room this afternoon. They only described it as Pope Benedict's first trip outside Italy as pontiff. Of course, a small mercury spill at at soap opera studio was given more urgent billing over the WYD story.

I am hoping that the coming days will bring larger crowds and more attention as WYD rocks Cologne!

My paper had an article this morning, their emphasis was:

- Pope has not been back for a long time
- Church is diminished in relevance in Europe
- Interviewees say the Pope is nice but out of touch with today's morals

Well...at least my parakeet enjoyed that paper

I am also disappointed by the lack of coverage. I tuned in to CNN the other day and all I got was wall-to-wall converage of grizzly crime stories. Why can't they show something edifying for a change? This distinction between "hard" news and "soft" news is an artificial distinction created by journalists, not by viewers.

Well if the only secular coverage is going to be negative, I'd prefer less coverage from them and consider it good news they haven't found anything to go on and on an on about.

Watching EWTN via internet, and wow, Papa Benny looks really good! I hadn't seen him since he became Pope, and then I thought he looked frail but here, he looks rested, refreshed and at peace.

We are truly blessed.

Yup! your all correct... theres absolutely NO coverage and I so wanted to see more of the participants (ok hoped to see my son) EWTN has done a fabulous job and I'm so grateful that at least they're covering it from the true angle.
I do wonder though about the kids that bash Holy Mother Church, why they even bother to go to WYD

There was an article in today's paper "Pope asks Musilms to join Christians in terrorism fight." It is positive and there are quotes. There's even a quote from a muslim, Ridan Cakir (president of the Turkish Islamic Union), saying, "With this common platform, we are able together to fight terrorism."

I hope since the pope has arrived that there will be a little story about it on the news today. I wait to see.
