Thank you, 4elise!

Can you tell me how to add an avatar? When I go into the Control Panel and the Edit Avatar area, there is a blue dot on NOT having an avatar, and it won't go away. Do you have to be a "regular" member before you can post one? Is that a matter of time or a certain number of posts? Thanks for your help.

I believe you have to have a certain number of posts before that is an option - not sure if it is 'regular' member because new member can have them too.... so keep posting (do it here on our threads!) and check from time to time if that is an option - it took a long time before I could add my own, and not use one of the ones available on CAF - I like mine because to me it is to me Eucharistic looking and speaks of how God has given us creation to be stewards of with all our choices!

It is great to see this group here. We have been vegetarians off and on, but now would seriously like to become vegan. Look forward to hearing what everyone has to say. God bless.

Welcome AnnaAnna - take a look around at the various threads, recipes, resources, discussions - and join us on the Social wall for the 'Veggie Name Game" --- think we are looking for a veggie that starts with 'M'

Hello there!
I am sort of in transition, spiritually I am there but practically not. I have been considering the switch to vegetarian diet for a long time but always found it too much challenging to bother with. I know that I could do at least some sort of Mediterranean diet encompassing eggs, milk products and occasionally fish.

I would be interested of how those of you with families have managed the switch -especially those of you who do most of the cooking. Are your families still eating meat and what was their reaction to you being a vegetarian/vegan?

I am also a little bit doubtful as I am pregnant now as to whether the switch would be good idea right this moment. How would I get the necessary nutrients? I do have some pretty good Turkish shops nearby and their vegetarian selection is very encouraging though.

All of your inputs would be much appreciated

Hi Rafaela, welcome and congratulations!

My vegan daughter gave birth to a beautiful and healthy daughter four months ago - she has been a vegetarian since she was about nine, and went vegan in college - so it is of course possible to be a healthy vegan mommy!

Transitioning presents some challenges, and if this is not the easiest time for you to do this, you can of course reduce your meat consumption, and replace with vegetable protein - tofu, tempeh, beans, nuts, it isn't that difficult to replace the amount of protein you currently eat in other forms with these - and that is about as simple as it is - there are many meat substitutes - some have a lot of fat and salt, so here are some links with additional information:

http://www.exploreveg.org/resources
http://www.vegan.org/going_vegan/index.html

In my opinion - if you are the one who cooks, it is easier to make this transition - then if you are the family member who feels they are imposing on the family cook - you can easily lead your family to a healthier and more compassionate diet by preparing healthy and delicious meals and not make a big deal out of it... please feel free to ask us questions - we are here to help -

but the bottom line - as an expectant mom - be sure you talk to your doctor about your dietary needs - if it is simply a matter of 'swap' one protein for another - it is easy - just read labels, know the proteins you are getting and it will be easy to replace with vege protein.

I wanted to share this organization with you all:

Seems like they're doing great things!

Also, I just wanted to remind you all that the food industry is extremely cruel to animals. I am sorry to post this, but unfortunately video doesn't lie: http://www.opposecruelty.org/guide/free_guide2.html

I'm so sorry if you watched that :'( I was in tears and felt hopeless, but we must NOT. We must take this one step at a time, and work for humane treatment of and conditions for all humans and animals.

God bless you all!

Hi I'm Anna and I live in California.
I have been an on and off Vegetarian since my early teenage years, and now an on and off Vegan for about a little more than a year.

I don't have a huge paragraph why I have chosen this lifestyle and how it goes with my faith...but I simply do not like the way the animals are being treated, I do not like all the statistics I have read on how bad butchering animals are bad for our health and our environment, and I just simply like animals!

I've been eating a plant based diet for about two and a half months now and am surprised to find this group! My reasons are purely for health factors stemming from a few documentaries that I have watched regarding the food industry with the meat producers being the main focus. I'm not totally opposed to eating meat at any time, but with that said it is a rare event for me to eat meat. I have noticed a 15lb weight loss and find that my energy levels are higher. I'm also getting better sleep with less stiff necks and achy joints in the morning when I wake. Through all of this the most amazing turn is that of my children which are ages 10, 9, and 5. They have transitioned without a hiccup and do not complain about the vast amount of vegetables and meat substitutes that we now eat. Thanks be to God for making this change a seemless one and I pray that my children will benefit from the decision that their mother and I have made.

God Bless!

Thomas

Congrats and keep up the good work. So often we don't view treatment of our bodies as a spiritual practice. I'm glad to see your kids are following you without complaint. If you stay on this path, you will find it quite rewarding. Stay with us, we need one another's support.
