Default Key of heaven prayer book?

While I was rummaging through some stuff in my grandmothers attic I found a little prayer book called Key of Heaven. It looks very old but there is no publication date, but there is a list of Imprimaturs and the bishops who gave them, and I was wondering if anyone could help me identify how old it is. Here are the names attached to the imprimaturs:

James, Card. Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore

Patrick John, Archbishop of Philadelphia

E.F. Prendergast, Archbishop of Philadelphia.

There are a lot of "Key of Heaven" prayer books published from 1879-1924, so I copied a sampling of those as well, even though they had different imprimaturs-- or no imprimatur listing at all in the bookseller's description.

Just going by the archbishops listed:
Patrick John Ryan (18841911)
Edmond Prendergast (19111918)
James Gibbons (18771921)

I'd probably put your specific book at sometime after 1911 and perhaps before or during the early 1920's.

Either way, seems like you have a nice little book there!

The Key of Heaven
Milner, Right Reverend J.
Publisher: H. L. Kilner & Co., Philadelphia

Edition: New Revised Edition
Book Type: Catholic Prayer Book

228 pages, black endpages are cracked at inside hinges although the binding is sound, subtle crease on back strip, padded fine leather binding, gilt lettering. Imprimatur of Cardinal Gibbons. Nice little book.

Full-Leather book has cover wear including wear to the leather and a raw edge or two; inside has a few dog-eared pages, a little foxing and the previous owner's name to back inside cover. At the back of the book there are about eight pages containing ads for other books. The crusifix area is not purfect but it is in very good condition.

Thank you very much I can't believe I forgot to mention who published it (H. L. Kilner & Co., Philadelphia). So Judging by the number of pages and the publisher this particular book must have been published on or after 1904.

Has some very nice illustrations in it.

I have this copy.

Key of Heaven
Milner, Right Reverend J.

The book is dated 1874 and signed and dated by I assume the original owner 1877. Its an interesting look into this time period in Catholicism. I picked it up a tag sale, while not in great condition, it is all there.

Question Re: Key of heaven prayer book?

Good Evening:

I too have a very old (1905) Key of Heaven Prayer Book for Catholics. This is a family collectable that was handed down to me, many years ago, by my grandmother. The prayer book is similar to others in this group discussion with one major difference. The prayer book has a beautiful, (enamel hard cover) detailed color picture of Jesus on the front. Also has the metal clasp. The printer was Francis Quinn & Company of Philadelphia, PA. Also noted was John Barley, Arch Bishop of New York.

My daughter wanted to know if the old prayer books have any value, because they are antiques? She is curious and wanted to know if anyone has knowledge of their value?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Mary
