San Diego!
My best friends are off to San Diego. Any ideas of things to do off the beaten path? (On the beaten path is fine for really cool things!)
My husband and I were there years and years ago. We went to one of the missions for Mass and to the Coronado for lunch. We only drove down from LA for the day. I remember it was such a nice place, but that's about all I remember!

Re: San Diego!
Well, if they're early risers go out the 8 to sunrise highway and find a place to park that overlooks the desert and watch the sunrise. Then drive into Julian for breakfast, hit Dudley's bakery heading back into the megapolis. Maybe check out the museums in Balboa Park. Or, they can hit the Wild Animal Park (it's associated with the San Diego Zoo but it's North and inland from SD about ~70 miles. Of course there's also Sea World. There's also the USS MIDWAY museum- it's moored along the bay. There's a Russian Fox Trot sub as well, but I don't know if that's open to visitors yet. Gillespie Field has an aviation museum that's associated with the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park.
Watching the sunset at Sunset Cliffs can be very pretty, if the weather cooperates and it's a clear day.
Do they SCUBA or Skydive? Both can be done here, I don't recommend shore diving as the visibility is pretty marginal but there are boat trips they can book on-line that hit some wrecks (both deliberately sunk and accidents). There's a skydive strip/facility out towards Otay Lakes in East County.

The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla is one of the best places to visit in and around San Diego.

Re: San Diego!
Padre Cross in Presidio Park is the site of the first Mass in California. And a beautiful location, to boot. It's more "on the path" than off, but well worth a visit. Old Town is not far away and is also a great place to visit.
A really nice place to visit is the Hotel Del Coronado. Muy expensivo, but it is also open to the public and has a lot of history behind it.
If they are looking for a good place to go for Mass in the downtown area, they should try Our Lady of the Rosary. It is in Little Italy, is a beautiful church built by local fishermen, and is a fairly solid Catholic parish. And Little Italy is itself a fun place to walk around.
Finally, no visit would be complete without going out to see Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma. It's near the sea and is just a lovely area. And, if they like history, this (along with Presidio Park and Old Town) is where San Diego began.

Re: San Diego!
Definitely hit up Las Cuatros Milpas in Barrio Logan for lunch. Go early, though! The place is a hole in the wall but always has a line down the street.
