Why can you only edit a post for 20 minutes?

I am curious what the reason/reasons are for only allowing a post edit to take place within 20 minutes of the original posting?

Someone could quote your post, and you could then go back later and edit and say you never posted that......

Someone asked the same question a while back. As one person explained.

Like he said, it was extreme example but it got the point across lol.

Let's say that in the case of an emotional out burst you go and type something offensive. The forum gives you the option to go and amend your act. If you don't do so, only after the 20 minutes are up will you get "punishment" if the post is reported. Because you had the option to correct your mistake, but chose not to.
