Default So glad to find this group!

Greetings all Campionites!

Since joining CAF in July 2010 I have used the name Edmundus1581 to acknowledge one of my favourite saints, St Edmund Campion! I have always been drawn to him for his Englishness and his love of study and language, and for the way he gave up a glittering career in Protestant England to lose his life for Christ and the Catholic Church.

Before he left for his mission in England in 1580 a fellow priest left a note on his door "Pater Edmundus Campianus, Martyr". After a short mission he was captured, tortured and executed in 1581.

Pater Edmundus Campianus, Martyr, ora pro nobis!

Welcome, Edmundus 1581!

It's great to have another member who loves good Fr. Campion. Since when have you had a devotion to him? I came to love him through a book in the Vision Book Series Edmund Campion: Hero of God's Underground

How did you locate this group? Was it through browsing or an advertisement?

Do you have any other interests/hobbies you'd like to share with us?

God Bless,
Pearl of Tyburn

Thankyou!

I was reading about martyrs of the English reformation, about two years ago, and he immediately attracted me.

The post about Oliver Cromwell and 20th April appeared in the left hand column of CAF.

Rockclimbing? Can't really share that though, especially from here in Adelaide, Australia. , oh, and I sing in the church choir. It's one of the highlights of my week.

Hi, Edmundus!

Here are a few good books on the English martyrs you might like to check out:

The Prey of the Priest Catchers by Leo Knowles

This book tells the story of the 40 martys in a vivid and almost novel-like style. It is one of my favorite reads of all time.

Edmund Campion: Hero of God's Underground by Harold C. Gardiner S. J.

This is a book from the vision series for young people. It is the book that first kindled my interest in Fr. Campion and the English martyrs. A good read for all ages.

Edmund Campion: Jesuit and Martyr by Evelyn Waugh

A short yet inspiring biography on Campion that is a must read for those interested in him.

The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest by Fr. John Gerard

This is the autobiography of Fr. John Gerard, a heroic priest who served as an underground missionary during the great persacution. His tale includes unexpected conversions, betrayals, torture, and a harrowing escape from the Tower of London. A must read.

Thankyou for the suggestions Pearl. You seem to be an avid reader! I don't get to read nearly as much as I would like to, but I'll look to this list in the future for some suggestions. I'm sure that I'll enjoy one or two books from the list.

My reading on history and tradition is the monthly Australian journal AD2000. They occasionally publish interesting articles about Catholicism in England, Thomas More, Edmund Campion, the recusants, etc.

Here are some examples...

The Reformation and England's changing Coronation Oath

THE QUEST FOR SHAKESPEARE, by Joseph Pearce

EDMUND CAMPION, by Richard Simpson There's another one for you

From that review...

Quote:
Betrayed and captured at last, St Edmund had his finest hour in the Tower of London enduring endless interrogations by his theological opponents and answering their false arguments with a display of eloquence and burning conviction surely unparalleled to this day. And all this after having been tortured, deprived of food and sleep, and even of any physical support.

Despite his frailty he was immune both to threats and to enticements - even from Queen Elizabeth who was kept informed of his interrogations on the rack and offered him rich rewards for abandoning the Faith.

The testimony he gave during his defences itself reconverted several wavering Catholics and at the last the very blood of his martyrdom struck the clothing of an onlooker and inspired him to the Catholic priesthood (and eventually to Jesuit martyrdom as well).
