Yeah, you're right. I don't know why I'm bothering.

Apparently every human between the age of 13 and 22 can listen to an ipod and simultaneously hear and comprehend absolutely everything that happens around them at all times.
My 9th grade dauther told me so, and tries to prove it every morning in the car as I drive her to school.

Re: writing during mass?
And 30 years ago I was that same teen-age girl, who said the same thing to her parents, and who thought I was so cool with my Sony WalkMan!!

I am the queen of listening to my iphone while doing other things like playing games on my phone, reading, studying etc.
However, there is always some level of distraction.
I know enough to lower the volume when crossing the street.

Re: writing during mass?
I don't know how an ipod, or iphone entered this discussion. I think we can all agree that listening to either during mass is considered rude, disrespectful, among a long list of things. If a person was quietly taking notes on their smart phone, again, this becomes a gray area depending on if they were making noise. That is not the point. The woman sits and writes in the back. As for the mention of the person being kicked out from the mass, it was as simple: priest did not like the writing, instead of talking to her about it, he told her no writing, ended the conversation and asked the council to tell her she wasn't allowed to attend mass if she wrote. It is that simple. Does it sound harsh, yes, but as crazy as it sounds that is what happened. The priest is human. We can agree there are other ways to handle the situation but again, that is between he and God. She doesn't attend that place anymore because of the way it was handled.
I think we need to stay on track with the question. Everyone's ideas have been interesting and I appreciate your honesty.

Re: writing during mass?
I was just thinking. Sometimes I'll sit in the back after a mass and write and the next mass starts and I stay there because I am not finished writing. People may think I am not participating but I actually have already attended Mass. It's no one's business what someone else does during Mass unless they are really disruptive. I have friend who was yelled at by an usher for reading her iPad during Mass. But what she was actually doing was following along with the readings on it.
