The Word is God
I propose that when God communicates with us, he does so through the image of words.
"The Word was with God and the Word was God."
When God appeared before Moses, he did so as fire, first because most were illiterate, but also because Judaism was to counteract the fire sacrifices of the pagans.
After God appeared to Moses in the form of fire, he sent him out to Canaan - the land of the Giants: the extraordinarily powerful half man half angel race, who only the "chosen" could defeat.
