Lightbulb The Refrigerator Light Fairy & Other Little Folk In Everyday Life

This might be fun if we can generate enough ideas. I'm thinking there are a lot of unseen magical folk in our everyday lives (many of them enforcers of "Murphy's Laws" and it might be fun to see if we can identify and describe some common species!

I'll post a few examples to get started:
  • The Refrigerator Light Fairy - this fellow doesn't mind a chilly environment, and his job is to turn the refrigerator light on when you open the door, and off when you close the door.
  • The Stoplight Leprechaun - this impish dude has excellent vision and timing. He resides atop stoplights and either makes the light change to yellow at the precise moment when you can't decide whether to screech on your brakes or just floor it through and hope there's not a cop - or another car Also, when you're approaching a red light, Stoplight Leprechauns like to prevent it from turning green until the precise moment you've resigned yourself to coming to a complete stop.
  • The Dirty Laundry Fairy - believed to exist by many husbands, existence disputed by their wives.

Search Engine Djinni - Made up of electricity and can read every piece of internet content to have ever existed, all for the purpose of only putting high-paying big-shots at the top results. Its lamp is currently held in a secret underground facility owned by Google.

Minnesota lumber jacks swore there were creatures of the kind, like the Hidebehind, which no matter how fast you turned, was always squarely behind you (explains the feeling of being followed, or watched) ... or the Hatchet Hound, which has an appetite for hatchet handles. Ths explains why my good hatchet is always kind of chewed up just under the head. They also work on sledge hammer handles, chewing the same spot.
My dear Pappy swore as to the existence of the Mugwump, a legendary bird who sat with its mug on one side of the fence and its wump on the other.
When I was but a wee lad, I watched dear old Dad use his bench grinder.
He'd bought the grinder head but powered it with a mostly wore out washing machine motor with bad brushes; the blue fire was constant, through its air holes in back, and I asked the Grand Old Man as to the source of said azure discharge.
Never one to pull my leg, he said with a straight face, "There's a little man in there turning a crank and that's what makes the motor turn. The crank has a governor on it and if he slows down, why, the governor runs some electric and zips him across the behind and makes him crank faster."
My reply was, "He must be an awful lazy sort, that blue fire is just a-flyin'!"
Such a serious and solemn observation by a straight faced little boy not yet in first grade struck the pater's funny bone hard enough he had to quit grinding and dedicate himself to laughing and wiping his eyes.

One that affects only musicians and more specifically, guitarists/bassists.

Pick gnomes- These little guys sense when you're about to start some serious practice or when you really NEED a pick (plectrum) and then steal any picks laying about and hide them. They also take advantage of any picks that are then left on tables and on stools/music stands.

Also see: drumstick fairies. Same as above, only for drummers.

Sock monsters- No matter how carefully I make sure that pairs of socks go into the washer, I always seem to lose single socks. Seems that there's a sock monster eating my socks in the washer. He likes green ones in particular.

Pen fairies - a bit like the pick and drumstick fairies above, but their purpose is to hide pens when you need them.

There's one I'll call the inappropriate clothing fairy - it hides in your cupboard and ensures that you choose

overly warm clothing on days that turn out to be hot,
overly cool clothing on days that turn out to be cold,
uncomfortable high heels on days when you end up having to do a lot of walking,
schlubby sweats on days you end up bumping into the last person you want to see you looking messy, etc etc.

Also, the 'I can't find that clothing even though I know it's in here somewhere' fairy.

Ah, the Stop Light Leprechaun--that would explain why I always get a red light at a certain intersection. Once, while driving home from a mall about 5 miles away, I got green lights at every intersection--it was wonderful--until I got to this particular one.

Then there's the Hider--related to the Pick Gnome--who takes your glasses or keys. It especially delights in teasing senior citizens this way.

How about the shopping cart gnomes....They sneak into grocery stores in the middle of the night and bang the wheels with sledgehammers to be sure that they are misaligned and never go straight.

And they jam them together so that you can't take them apart.

They work in concert with the string-sprites, who then wrap the wheels with various colored bits of string for backup in case the previous two methods fail!

In my house we have the Missing Libarary Book Elf....amazingly the night before library day at school he appears and takes the library book right off the bedside table.

Then we have the cousin of Missing Library Book Elf, he's the Take the Book from the Backpack Gnome.

He steals books that were sworn to be placed in the backpack at school, but never reached home.

We have the Baby Wipe Sprite who ironically makes sure the container is empty right before a diaper change.

Plus the tooth fairy who needs glasses. He mistook a $20 with a $1 making for one happy 7 year old. (it was dark)

The "Last One" Fairy - noms the last potato chip in the bag, pizza slice, piece of cake on the plate, or chocolate in the box, drinks the last can of soda or cup of coffee you were wanting . . .

"Lock Up Monty" - Just when you've locked up the house, and you're about to drive off, Lock Up Monty will remind you that you've forgotten to take something. Then ... turn off the car, unlock the gate, unlock the door and screen door, turn off the alarm, get the item, set the alarm, lock the door, lock the screen door, lock the gate, and get back in the car.

Then there's "Drive Off Monty". He's a bit slower on the uptake. He waits until you're a couple of miles down the road, and then he reminds you that you've forgotten something.

They do this with a cart compressor.

How could we forget the Key Fairy? He hides your keys just when you are in a hurry to go somewhere.

There is also the Eyeglass Fairy, brother to the Key Fairy.
