Religion: Catholic
Default St. John of the Cross

I have been reflecting on St. John of the Cross a great deal. He is the apostle of a spirituality that incorporates at least four crucial elements. The sacraments, the sacred scriptures, the Holy Spirit, and the denying of oneself and taking up one's cross for the sake of Jesus Christ.

Without the sacraments we have not the sacred. Without the sacred scriptures we have the dangers of a new age spirituality. Without the Holy Spirit we have the dangers of religious legalism. Without the cross we have a lukewarm Christianity.

Combined with these four crucial elements necessary for union with God, St. John of the Cross was given an understanding of human behavior and psychology in order to differentiate human deception from the deception of the evil one.

I want to thank Catholic Answers, and it participants for my becoming aware of this great saint. I want to also thank God for not holding back his gifts and callings to the Jewish people. (apparently, St. John's father was Jewish).

God's peace.
