Default Pastor loses 2/3 of congregation over "gay marriage"

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/0...ev-his-church/

From the article: "... White said two-thirds of his followers left after he said he supported same-sex marriage, and said he was against the marriage amendment that will be up for a vote in November.

'I think people are scared — scared of change, and what has been in the closet is finally coming out, and too many people are not willing to accept it,' White said.

He argued they have to accept it, adding that it’s a civil rights issue.

'It’s time for our society to do as Rodney King did and say, "Can’t we all get along?" That should be the 11th commandment as far as I’m concerned,' he said. ..."

I read that article. Part of me said "duh." He didn't think that would happen?

I'm surprised a third remained.

According to the article it was a United Church of Christ church. So I can see why he is surprised. I'm actually surprised. The UCC is very pro gay and has officially endorsed gay marriage since 2005. I'm not sure why a person would remain in the UCC if they oppose gay marriage.

As far as he's concerned it should be the 11th Commandment. No more proof is needed of the dangers of the heresy of sola scriptura. Because he lacks the understanding of Christ's message he was able to build his own theology, his own religion for himself that he spread to others. It does not surprise me that he thinks so highly of something completely unchristian. Thank God 2/3 of his congregation were able to have enough foresight to understand this man does not know Christ and have left his charge. May they come to find Christ's One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church through their wanderings.

Luckily for us, you're not Jesus, and there's only 10.

OK, but I propose an amendment to the commandment, "Can’t we all get along ... without this 'gay marriage' NONSENSE?" Or at least let some more worthy nonsense float to the top of the septic tank of goofoid society's "Cause-du-jour".

The UCC allows each congregation to decide its own course on such issues. And some congregations are more conservative than others.

Quote:
The church began faltering in 2005, when White attended a national UCC assembly in Atlanta and voted with a majority of delegates in favor of a resolution supporting gay marriage. His vote didn't sit well with most of the 320 or so Grace Community Church members.

"I was really in shock," said White, who's been pastor at the church for 22 years. "I visited one member after another, who told me they weren't coming back because of it. The membership evaporated right before my eyes. Their fundamental belief was it's wrong for a man and a man to marry or a woman and a woman to marry. A lot of them said if I change, they'd come back. But I told them, it is what it is. I am who I am. And this is what I fight for."

bizzare,
I would run from any pastor who has memorized and quotes Rodney King when giving spiritual guidance.

I have nothing against Rodney

We really have lost our sense of what marriage is as a society. To think this ball started rolling with the Supreme Court decision of Griswold vs. Connecticut.

Very telling, that he thinks he can change what God has made, in that, he thinks he can change the commandments, so is it any wonder he can also change nature the way God created it, and permit Gay marriage.

Good point. Besides, how can "can't we all get along" be constructed in the form of a commandment and how would it help resolve disagreements? It seems to me that such a commandment would mean nothing, in practice, since it neither forbids nor commands any particular behavior.

Thou shalt not disagree?

But wouldn't that contradict what Christ tells us about His bringing division? Isn't there a division between light and darkness? It seems as though this pastor is not doing the Lord's work. There is some serious darkness on his part.
