Default Spiritual Direction

Hi

From September, I will be working at a retreat centre for a year with young people as part of a team. I have heard from the current team that they receive spiritual direction. I am not sure whether this is compulsory or optional.

My problem is, I am unsure what the process is for finding a spiritual director. Do they have to be ordained or part of a religious order or can lay people also be spiritual directors? Can you ask someone you know or do they have to be someone unknown to you?

Also, can anyone give me any information about the spiritual direction process?

Thank you

I'm interested in the answer(s) you may receive!! I also am in search of a spiritual director. I am trying to see my priest but my schedule and his schedule is NOT meeting up!! I did have a thought and I asked the woman who sponsored me. She is very devout and quite knowledgeable. She said she doesn't the training. But then I discussed some of the issues I have been having with my faith-life and we talked a bit and she had some very good points. She said that she would be more than willing for me to come over and we could pray about it together. I really like her and think she would make a PERFECT director and her advise and offer to pray is similar to what a spiritual director does, right?! Again, I'm very eager to hear what advise others have for you.

Pray for the persecuted Christians living under Islamic and communist-party rule.

Let us experience some Coptic Orthodox chant: "Ten Te Nem Bi." Brief but beautiful.
