I suppose it could be a squirrel, Mary Gail, assuming of course that the animal's body and hill are blocking its tail from the camera's view. But I am inclined to go with IrishRush's suggestion that it's a prairie dog. If it had a strip along its side then it could possibly be a chipmunk, but it doesn't. In any event, I agree that it's definitely not a rat.

And speaking of chipmunks, here's a baby one...

Aww, that little guy is just too adorable! How cute!

Reminds me of a baby squirrel we found on the ground some years back after a storm had blown it out of its nest. Had to call the Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic for advice on how to proceed to try to save it. Ended up taking it into the Clinic, naming it Baby Squirrel Our Last Name, a play on the usage of Baby Girl for not yet named little girls.

Prairie dog is probaly correct., we don't have them in my area. We have raccoons, possums, field mice, skunks etc.

One time when DS was just about 10 months old, I had come home with him and needed to park a few blocks from our apartment.

I was carrying him, when I smelled the distinctive "eau de Pepe le Pew" I broke into a run toward my apartment, sprinted up the steps, carrying the baby, when I got to the top, I saw the culprit scamper across the block.

Thank goodness we were not sprayed!!!
