What happened to first-time caller "bugle" greeting?
I've noticed lately that Patrick is not doing the special "bugle" greeting to first-time callers?
When did this change? Why did they drop it? I really miss it.

Maybe they counted all the time the bugles took and decided they could have squeezed in more callers by dropping it.

Yeah, I miss it also.
He did say something about taking a rest from it for a while.

If this has anything to do with it, I've also noticed that Patrick's latest radio preview was low-tech, without any of the fancy computer graphics. Maybe their computers are down... or maybe they had a budget shortfall and had to scale back. I certainly hope not the latter.

Wasn't the "bugle" -umm- pretty low tech...?

I've heard some of their alternatives for that and... no, that can't be it.
Maybe he's just trying to find something new. Like all shows do from time to time. Like Doctor Who did when they abandoned the swirly tunnels for stars in the 80s.

I doubt it's budget. The "bugle" is very low tech and costs nothing.
It's unique to CAL and callers love it.
When it ain't broke don't fix it.
Hopefully CAL will bring it back.

I thought they came up with something new for every new Doctor.

They did... but for Docs 1-4 they used some kind of weird camera effect to make those swirl shapes and the swirly tunnels like in Tom Baker's intros. They were coooool.
Then in 1980 they made a computer animation.

Re: What happened to first-time caller "bugle" greeting?
Now, I just remember hearing this on a show, but sadly I can't remember which one. Though, it was a 1st hour show... Patrick said they'd be retiring the "bugle" unless it was an exceptionally good first time caller. Not sure why they did this, but apparently this is the new procedure.

It was a truly obnoxious "feature" that has, hopefully, been relegated to the dustbin of the show's archives.

I disagree.
It was a unique and well loved by most callers "sig" for the show.
If anything is obnoxious it is some of Patrick's banter and especially with Jimmy. I'd rather they drop the banter and keep the bugle.

Can't say I'm sorry to see it go. Kinda cute the first time, but it was a little cheesy.

Re: What happened to first-time caller "bugle" greeting?
I liked it. My speculation is that it was discontinued because sometimes it caught new callers who are already nervous off guard. But the whole show is awkward sometimes so I dont see why getting rid of the greeting will make it a better show. Or put callers at ease. personally I think part of a radio call in show is that people call in and it is personal. Sometimes I think the host can be all business and lose the idea of real people calling in with real questions. Many times Patrick cuts a caller off and re frames a question. Granted they are all the same questions but the host should remember that even though he has heard "Catholics worship Mary" 100,000 times the caller is trying it out for the first time on the show. Apologetics should not be so impersonal and dismissive.
A long way of saying: Bring back the horn!
Or perhaps Patrick has chapped lips?
