Well kind of. For me, it's just the idea that people demonize different types of foods and blame all the evils in the world on them. We do need glucose in order to run our brains and bodies, and refined sugar provides that glucose. Of course in excess, sugar causes cavities in our teeth and probably makes us fat. So all things in moderation.

Most fad diets require the restriction or elimination of a group of foods or one kind of food. Many people find that when they go off the diet, they crave the food they had to give up.

That is one thing which Weight Watchers does very well. Nothing is forbidden, you just have to choose which of your favorites are worth the points to eat. But I cannot be so hyper-focused on my food or I get kinda crazy. The main things I need to do are watching my portions, and exercising more.

It will take your body a while to adjust to new foods. If you replaced sugar with artificial sweeteners, you should switch back. Many diet drinks, soda, gum, pediasure, and many other things out there contain aspartame. When heated to body temp around 96 degrees, it turns into formaldahyde. You know, the stuff they embalm dead bodies with. Also look into buying certified organic foods, veggies, and milk. My wife and I went organic when we were still only dating and so far she has lost more weight than I weigh, without trying. She eats whatever she wants and her weight does go up and down, but it mainly goes down. There are so many every day products out there that cause you to gain weight. Cows are generally overproducing milk due to the introduction of hormones injected to make them produce more milk. This then leads to infections, which cause the introduction of anti-biotics into the milk that you end up drinking. The same can be said for the beef you eat and chickens are not exactly kept clean either. As far as veggies, do your research. There can be harmful pesticides in those too. All the garbage you injest that cannot be processed by your liver/kidneys, ends up stored in fat.

I have a ton to lose, and I am starting on Saturday.

We have some activities at work this week which keep me busy all day, so starting earlier would be futile, I couldn't watch what I eat or exercise before that. And the weekend will be more relaxed, I'll be able to plan a menu for next week, make sure we have everything I need, and not the no-no stuff I'm surrounded with at work this week.

It won't be anything too extreme, I'm just trying to get back to the lifestyle I had before, I used to eat smart and exercise, even with work I managed. And not so long ago, and these past 12 months have been one bad factor after another, I got a new job, which is great but I've been spending much more time sitting down, moved to a place further away from anything I could use as a track, then I hurt my back and got even more passive (but I really couldn't work out for months).
I packed on almost 25 pounds and now it's really too much. I had skirts with an elastic waist, but now it's getting colder and it's either lose some weight or buy a whole new wardrobe.

I hope your diet goes smoothly, a change is necessary when you have cholesterol issues, we do in this house too. We also deal with hereditary issues which make bringing the numbers in line very difficult. I would like to make some suggestions based on our similar experience and my background, I am a retired Health teacher.
First, if possible meet with a dietician, many insurance companies will cover this under the circumstances. They are wonderful at creating a logical, feasible diet.
Second, don't go overboard too quickly, try to do what you have always done, just modify your cooking to meet the new requirements. For example, substitute skim milk in recipes you usually have used cream or whole milk. These small changes make it easier to stay with the diet over time.
Third, exercise is critical in this plan and it is a good time to begin a workout routine. I especially like walking, it is a great time together but it also is a perfect exercise to get started with.
Last, God bless you with this opportunity. Turn to Him to lead you along a path to a healthier life.

Also, they are so cheap that you can really experiment with different brands and types without breaking the bank. I've recently been buying some from the local Chinese grocery store, and it's opened a whole new tin of sardines for me.
The thing to watch for with sardines is they can take any small fish, put them in a can and market them as sardines. I would suggest the ones that use Brisling, they are very small fish, very tasty and you dont notice the bones. It is just a pleasant crunch.

Friend you do not have to give up all sugar. Try Agave is amazing sweetener. Sugar is only evil if you can not control yourself. It will take you time to adjust to fiber.

You will crash and burn if you completely cut out things. The diets that last the longest are ones that are done right and in moderation.

I went thru a coffee withdrawal and it was terrible. So, I feel you pain.

Have you tried KIND bars? They are great.

Don't forget you need exercise.

I will pray for you. Please pray for me too because I am not what I should be either and it is hard.

Once you get thru the first couple of weeks, you will rock.!!

You have more strength then I ever could. I pray God shows you favor to obtain this Goal!!

I have read with interest most of the posts on this thread. My own experience is my loss of 70 pounds in about 1.5 years after joining Weight Watchers. It is a very sensible diet with emphasis on fruit and protein. You might want to check it out. The downside of this diet is that it can cost you money for the weekly meetings. Good luck!

Yes you are right it does work. You count points and can still have treats. I would stock pile for sundays. Their INTERNET site is awesome. You can sign up and do meetings on line, and recipe builders, and 24 support.

Great thinkin lincoln...

I was the second poster after the OP describing my and my husband's situation and the change of lifestyle we have adopted. I'm pleased to say that I have lost 16lbs since that post, all without any real pain. I have RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and moving has become much easier since the change of diet. This month we treated ourselves to 3 fatty meals. Two were due to having company from afar come stay with us and one was a meal shared as an invitation.
In one hour my husband will be going to the doctor to see if his cholesterol has dropped any so I will report in later on. He's going to have to buy new pants soon as his old ones just won't stay up. That's a good sign, but doesn't necessarily mean the cholesterol has lowered. All we can do is hope. I still don't think a month is enough to make a difference in blood levels but what do I know?

Back from the Dr's and my husband is thoroughly stumped. His good cholesterol has gone down and his bad has gone up since the last tests. The doctor explained that he doubts that the good cholesterol will ever go up significantly since it's a genetic flaw in his system. He's very impressed with my husband's weight loss and told him that in no uncertain terms was he to discontinue what we've been doing.
It seems that he's at a high risk of heart disease, diabetes and all sorts of things due to cholesterol problem, and what we've been doing can do nothing but good things for his situation. That and the use of Lipitor that is.
So that's that, we trudge on and try to prevent stroke and ill health for him, and get me back to a manageable size again

I briefly looked over what some of you are talking about. I'm just gonna throw my voice into the conversation. I have read many books on nutrition, and consider it to be one of the things I love to learn and research. I personally have tried Keto diets(Low carbohydrates high fat , high protein). Moderate to high crab and higher protein diet. Moderate fat, carbohydrates, and protein. High protein, no carbohydrates, no fat. Probably some more that I'm forgetting, but those are certainly the main ones. Out of all this dieting I have found out.
A. You have to diet according to your goals
B. There is no such thing as bad food, only bad food timing.(well some bad food)
C. All diets have a purpose for some period of time
D. Every Macro nutrient (Carbohydrates, fat, protein) is neccesary in the everyday human diet.
I personally do not have a degree in nutrition, but I would be happy to discuss any thing with anyone on the subject.
Take care and God Bless.

In your opinion, how much of one's weight is due to genes and how much is due to lifestyle? In Gina Kolata's book "Rethinking Thin" she makes what I think is a strong argument that our body has a genetically-based concept of its "ideal weight" which it defends vigorously, and that this explains why it's so hard to lose weight and then maintain that weight. This corresponds to my experiences.

Hello Tomarin,
I do believe that everyone is capable of having their genetics determine their weight/body shape. But I do think that If ones lifestyle is as non sedentary as possible, supplemented with a healthy diet, then I know that weight will be mostly determined by the lifestyle. So to make some sense I'm saying that we can be happy with and inherit the weight genetics we are given, or we can choose to determine our own weight. The theory in "Rethinking Thin" is very interesting to me and I will look into it. But I personally believe that If a person changes their lifestyle (healthy balanced eating, daily excersize, less sedentary), then they will be able choose and maintain that weight much better. That's my opinion anyway.
