I've come across church buildings that label said building as a cathedral yet they don't even bishops in their denomination. To some Cathedral = Super Church!!!

I love the Cathedral in Springfield. Especially since the renovations.

I was there tonight, celebrating Bishop Paprocki's 2 year anniversary as our Bishop. BTW, I'm not sure how well this is known but Bishop Paprocki came up with the idea for Fortnight for Freedom. He's an amazing guy (and a pretty decent hockey player as well)!

St. James, the catholic cathedral in Seattle, is also very beautiful inside but I have a soft spot for St. Mark's.

They had intended St. Mark's to be a Victorian neo-gothic structure but due to the Great Depression and later WWII it only got partially built. It is still technically unfinished but they like their Byzantine-ish "Holy Box" the way it is now and have no plans to add to it (though I wish they had built a bell tower).

These two photos I took myself: the first is a late Sunday night after the beautiful compline service. The second is looking straight up on the pipes of the Flentrop organ.

Congratulations to you, JimmyB, on gaining a beautiful daughter in law and having a son who has graduated from West Point!!

You must be so proud!

I love her wedding dress. Your son looks so handsome and happy. Her flowers are gorgeous.

And the chapel is magnificent.

Unfortunately, yes. When I tell people my church is a cathedral, they look puzzled when they arrive at this:

Claiming that your random assertion has basically the same value as a similar assertion by, say, the Archbishop of Canterbury leads to squick.

I'm a little curious about what you would call Canterbury Cathedral apart from a cathedral, but I'm also a little bit afraid that will lead to more squick.

Thank you so much PRmerger.... and this is why you continue to be one of my favorites here at CAF. I have two sons and they both received Congressional Nominations to attend the USMA at West Point, NY.... and my "Perfect Daughter" , who is also a veteran, is working at the Pentagon. I may have had some setbacks in life (physically),... seriously injured in the line of duty... However, I've been blessed with an awesome wife and awesome kids and a profound Catholic faith and a close and loyal relationship with God... What more can you ask for???

I like old cathedrals, chapels and missions....

We don't have any missions (as far as I know) in my neck of the woods, but there's nothing like a cathedral or a chapel to draw you into the Silence and know that He is there.

That is beautiful! If it's like the orthodox church I've visited (and I'm sure it is) all of the walls are filled with icons. Small but visually stunning!

Here is the interior of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Tacoma. The second photo looks flat but I'm looking up into a tall dome. What look like light-grey tabs with pink patterns are stained glass windows.

It was a very attractive modern church, but after the pastor had the congregation fund extension after extension, he had it sold and torn down to make a megachurch for himself. He ended up moving into an old Target store in a strip mall. Sad story, to me at least.
