Default Re: What happened to first-time caller "bugle" greeting?

1) I haven't decided if I miss the bugle or if I enjoy it's absence.

2) I think Patrick does what he has to do to keep the show moving. Some people could go on and on and on without EVER hitting the point and that would be annoying to listen to. I appreciate that he attempts to keep those callers in line by making them get to the point.

3) Sometimes I wish they'd argue more with the aggressive callers... but it's just the part of me that enjoys gladiator battles that feels that way.

I too miss "the trumpet blast of love" and the callers certainly did. I hope it returns.

If anything is obnoxious it is some of Patrick's banter and especially with Jimmy. I'd rather they drop the banter and keep the bugle.
At first I thought the bugle was a bit silly, but then it became kinda cute. I have to admit it did make me smile when I was a 1st time caller.

I gotta agree about the banter. They can go on and on and it is not as funny as they believe it is, and then the next caller they tell to get to their question. Not very friendly sometimes.

The banter has gotten old IMO.

The host is, as one caller a while back said (surprised it got on the air), "too cute by half" The caller did not mean that as a compliment. The caller actually asked the host to be quiet and let the guest answer the question.

Truth be told I miss Jerry Usher.

I'm listening to CA radio significantly less in the past year. Because of this kind of stuff.

Hope the current host steps back and realizes the show is not all about him. Sorry to be so blunt. I assume this post will get deleted. Oh well.

Oh I hope you tune into some of the other programs. Catholic Answers is the only show that makes me cringe at times when they rush the caller. I know they need to keep the show moving but they can be nice.
They probably have a lot of callers because they do get out some really good info.
But check out some of the other shows I don't really hear that elsewhere.

Which other shows do you mean?

EWTN's Open Line is one that comes to mind. They call it "fast paced" but every time I tune in, they seem to have time to draw out longer conversations with their callers and share other reflections. I think the broadcast time makes a difference. Open Line is midday while CAL is late afternoon to evening in most markets.

Everyone is a critic. I wonder if each of us had a radio show what people would say about our personalities.

I think that if Jesus came back and hosted a radio show, there would be folks on the forum saying, "You know, he's really not a very compelling speaker. And he keeps telling those same parables over and over!"

Yep that was exactly the one I was thinking of. There is a different host each day. It has good information. No guests, the hosts answer the caller's questions.

And sometimes those hosts are guests on Catholic Answers Live!

I try to catch the EWTN call-in shows. More professional in terms of hosting than CAL. JMHO.

I've found a local Proteatant call-in show that airs around the CAL time here and listen because it is much more Bible focused. And not anti-Catholic.

It's all personal tastes I guess. Too much of the current CAL host's ego comes through for my taste. That never happened with Jerry. But that is just me and others will feel differently.

Thumbs up Re: What happened to first-time caller "bugle" greeting?

I think radio is our grand entertainment channel. And this channel can extract us from boring mode. The radio Pakistan informs about many information.

I couldn't agree with this more. It only adds insult to injury that, unfortunately, the vast, vast majority of Jerry's shows are no longer available.

Just for the sake of information, I listened to two random episodes of CAL on which Jimmy Akin was the guest apologist.

July 3, 2008, with Jerry Usher.

June 7, 2012, with Patrick Coffin.

Jerry was a kindly gentleman, and a gracious host; he was humble, and he exhumed a professional, intelligent air. When Patrick Coffin arrived, I'm sorry to say the entire ambiance and presence of the show went off in a completely different direction, maybe even towards crass edutainment.

I'm pleased the "trumpet blast of love" has been taken off of the show; and I sincerely wish the consistent one-liners and near insulting jokes -- Jimmy Akin is addicted to brake fluid!!! nyuk-nyuk-nyuk --- would follow.
