My sense is that that the new ceremony is sort of like religious marriage, but without the legal benefits and with a different name. I haven't seen the text of the ceremony, and it might be interesting to compare it with the text used for traditional marriages.

Here is the body of the resolution which was just approved. Perhaps others here are familiar with the documents which are referenced?

Resolved, the House of _______ concurring, That the 77th General Convention
commend "Liturgical Resources I: I Will Bless You and You Will Be a Blessing"
for study and use in congregations and dioceses of The Episcopal Church; and be
it further

Resolved, That the 77th General Convention authorize for trial use "The
Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant" from "Liturgical Resources I: I
Will Bless You and You Will Be a Blessing" beginning the First Sunday of Advent
2012, under the direction of a bishop exercising ecclesiastical authority; and be it

Resolved, That bishops, particularly those in dioceses within civil jurisdictions
where same-gender marriage, civil unions, or domestic partnerships are legal,
may provide generous pastoral response to meet the needs of members of this
Church, including adaptation of the liturgy and declaration of intention contained

The whole thing is very sad.

The LC-MS does not and will not ordain gay clergy (or women, for that matter) although the ELCA does. Stated plainly, the LC-MS says that homosexuality is a sin. Sin must be repented, not blessed.
