How many infractions do I need to get banned?
Moderator wouldn't answer this question so I'm posting it here. I just got yet another 5-point infraction. How many infractions do I need to be banned, and what happens when infractions expire? Do I need to rack up active ones before they take action, or do they look at the expired ones too?

Re: How many infractions do I need to get banned?
Could be 20 or 21 (it is on the site I moderate - 65,000 bikers!)
They have to be active (usually)
Infractions expire in a given time.
Though it may not be a numbers game. A member could do something so outrageous it gets them banned right away.
On the site I moderate it really depends on whether you are typically a decent poster who gets carried away from time to time, or whether you are a trouble maker looking for attention.

Do you want to know how many strikes you have left before you make a particulary harsh remark?

Found this in a post of Dale_M's: (Beware, the original content is several years old now)

Warnings carry no points, however infractions do. Warnings and infractions normally have a time limit associated with them, which shows up in your profile in a report that only you and the moderators see.
Infractions range in point value from 1 to 1000 depending on the severity. They can accumulate and you can find your account in a moderated or suspended mode until they expire.
The current point system (which may change without notice) is as follows:
Your posts are Moderated - 50 Points
Your account is suspended - 100 Points
Your account is banned - 500 Points
If your account is Moderated, your posts do not appear until a moderator approves them.
If your account is Suspended you do not have forum privileges until the points expire
Normally a banned account is permanent

The important thing to note is that:

In other words, you may think you're okay with 10 points and then you say something that earns you a 90 point infraction.
Whoops! Suspended!

I've seen some members contributing even though their status is 'banned' (for all to see when they post).

In most cases, when a member is banned the majority of their posts remain visible. Only the most egregious posts are removed. Consequently, an active thread will still show their posts, particularly if they were only recently banned.
Granted, though, there are rare occurrences of a banned member's entire post history being completely scrubbed.

Banning is the last step and is taken very seriously by the moderating staff. Whereas it is possible that a member is banned after simply one post (e.g., posting pornography or an egregious post against the Church or Church members) usually a member is counseled before banning or suspension. Often the form of counseling the moderating staff uses are infractions or warnings. Some members have racked up a number of these over the years.
The best advice I can give is to read the forum rules and post accordingly and you will not have a problem.

See the link in my sig line for the best way to avoid catching infractions or getting suspended/banned.
As Robert said, that is not done lightly, but when it's merited...
There is an Admin post which explains most all of this that will also help.

Re: How many infractions do I need to get banned?
Also remember to post appropriately. If you're constantly posting biblical questions in Eastern Catholicism, because your friends are there or moral theology questions in TC forum because you believe that no one except your friends or a particular group can give you the right answer, you're going to get into trouble. Moderators have only so much time and patience to be moving threads around.
Sometimes, people unintentionally post in the wrong place and the moderator can tell. There are people who have been on certain sub-forums for a long time. They know what the sub-forum is for. They know that apologetics belongs in apologetics, not liturgy or TC or Scripture. Such a person is showing a disregard for order and for others who don't want to read about stealing cookies from grandma' in the liturgy forum.

Other than a problem I see with moderating on any internet forum is there is a degree of subjectively involved as to what a mod determines to be uncharitable or not towards another poster, or against a forum's rules. There's no getting around that. No one can hear another's tone on the internet nor know what was truly a poster's intent. Mods along with whoever it is who might handle any appeals process on any forum have a difficult job on any internet forum but lets not pretend it is precise, objective, rocket science. It can't be helped but to come with some degree of subjectively.

It's kind of like SCOTUS rulings. Others might not always agree.
