Unhappy Depressing Blindness

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and to this website, so please bear with me and let me know if I should be posting this question elsewhere! My father, who is in his late 60's was born with very limited sight, and which has gotten progressively worse throughout the years. He is now almost completely blind. He is and always has been a devout catholic, goes to church every Sunday, confession, small group, says morning & evening prayers, rosary, etc. My concern is that even though he does all of this (and I don't doubt his sincerity at all), he is struggling emotionally because of his impaired vision. When he is not at church, he stays holed up in his room on the computer all day, watching Mother Angelica or some other catholic program. He has grown extremely negative, pessimistic, and distant from my mother. It is a rare moment that he speaks to her without it being something negative or of a religious nature, or to chastise her for not wanting to do more "religious" things - if he speaks to her at all. All of this began about 4 or 5 years ago and has finally reached the point where my mother is now starting to get depressed because there is no communication in their home; it's like they're just roommates. He has commented a few times that this world is evil and he won't be happy until he's with the Lord. He is adamantly against seeking any kind of counseling - he doesn't think he has a problem; it's "everyone else" with the problem. Any advice??

Thanks for listening! God Bless.

This is sad for all involved. I do wish I had sound advice or words to offer you and your family for comfort. I shall keep you and your family in my prayers.

You do not need to be completely blind to be eligible for an assistance animal. A friend of mine became very active (and made lots of new friends) after getting a guide dog. It got him out of the house and interacting with others.
He also had a machine which magnified print so that he could continue reading. Getting out and staying active can be so helpful -to our mother as well as your father. May God bless them both, and you also. Amen.
