All you would need is two pieces of brown fabric (no pictures are necessary, in fact plain brown cloth best represents the Carmelite order). Attach strings so that one piece hangs in the back, and one in the front.
If money is tight, google "free brown scapular". There are some sites that will send you one, I believe you may need to send a stamped self-addressed envelope.

They are fun to make and economical too. I do, however, remember that the fabric has to be wool though.

Re: Making your own Brown Scapular?
Unless you have some brown wool scrap laying around, it might be cheaper just to buy a scapular. Even the "expensive" ones sell for less than ten dollars. Another alternative would be this: See if there is a novena going on right now to Our Lady of Mount Carmel at a church or monastery in your diocese, and go to it (usually, on the first or last nights, they do the whole investment with the scapular ceremony for anyone wanting to be enrolled in the scapular.) If they are doing the enrollment, they usually provide scapulars either free or very inexpensively.
If you're going to make your own, cut out two rectangular pieces of brown wool (1 inch by 1 1/2 inches is a convenient size,) and fasten them using two pieces of 18 inch long string, shoelace, ribbon, what have you. Sew the string at either end of one of the one inch long sides, and then sew the other end of the string to the one inch side of the other piece of wool. The string doesn't have to be of any particular color.
You can, if you're clever with a computer, download an image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, print it on iron-on transfer paper, and fuse that to one of the rectangles, using a clothes iron. But again, it's not necessary, in fact, a plain scapular is more in the spirit of the order of Carmel.

According to the new catechesis (2000) of both branches of the Carmelite Order, it no longer has to be wool.
