When, as a child, we do something that makes our mum unhappy with us and she sends us to our room, is that a sign that we must look for a new mother?

Excommunication is a communication from the Church to you that what you did was serious and you cannot receive the sacraments before you repent. The priest won't forgive you, the Lord will, the priest will just be someone who accompanies you at this event and pronounces the words of God's forgiveness.

As another poster has said, a priest may not have the authority to lift the excommunication immediately in every case. Nevertheless, you must talk to a priest and it would be better before long so you can stop worrying. I would call the parish office and make an appointment where you can speak to a priest face to face in a quiet environment rather than in a confessional where people are queueing behind you. Even if this first talk does not end up as a confession, what you say will be kept in confidence.

God bless.
