Anybody can say anything without the cameras and a free press present to prove or disprove their claims.

Would that in all our reactions to wrongdoing and wrongdoers, of all identities (be they criminal suspects, adulterers or bigots) we would have the Christian approach of love and compassion combined with and inseparable from justice and reform! Then it wouldn't have to hurt to acknowledge that Uncle Mike is not just 'eccentric' for sending that racist email, any more than Uncle Ben is justified in protesting racial discrimination while excluding his mixed-race cousins from all family functions! We could love both Uncles while tolerating none of their baser proclivities, and THAT is how 'living Catholicism/Christianity' stands out from simply going with the crowd and its passions.

Free press ? Hope you're not referring to the American newsmedia.

Is America the only country in the world with reporters?

Well he's certainly not referring to the Syrian government-mouthpiece, or the so-called "media" in Russia or China (neither of which would qualify for the most generous definition of free press).

Indeed. 'Free press' surely implies that reporters from anywhere (with the necessary credentials, of course) would be able to pursue their profession unhindered.
