Well he's certainly not referring to the Syrian government-mouthpiece, or the so-called "media" in Russia or China (neither of which would qualify for the most generous definition of free press).

Indeed. 'Free press' surely implies that reporters from anywhere (with the necessary credentials, of course) would be able to pursue their profession unhindered.
