It is a lot like dealing with a toddler, because no matter what happens you allow yourself to realize "no matter how great I am at dealing with this, toddlers will still have tantrums. It is what toddlers do."
No matter how firm and decisive a married couple is, their extended family will sometimes feel entitled to put their fingers into the dough. It is what families do. If they do it, it isn't something you are doing wrong, but giving in can make it worse. At any rate, it isn't something to punish yourself out. After all, no matter how many invitations to run your life you give, your family has no right to step in and do it. They need to keep their hands off and not only let you but insist that you make your own decisions.
