Saint Claire as Mary Magdalene?
I enjoyed reading Ino Manalo's perspective, but I am interested to see what Catholics really think about Ino Manalo's article?

Maria Clara is not Saint Claire. Are you Filipino? Maria Clara is a fictional character in Dr. Jose Rizal's novel, Noli Me Tangere. Maria Clara is the epitome of modesty. When a young lady is referred to as "Maria Clara" in the Philippines, it means she is very conservative and a virgin.

Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute? If yes, then she was not a "Maria Clara" type.

There is nothing in Scripture or Church teachings that say Mary Magdalene was a prostitute.
It was merely the personal opinion of Pope Gregory The Great.

As thisle has said, there is no scriptural evidence that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Although many teachers of the faith in the early Church would ascribe some of the known people in Jesus' time with those unnamed characters in the Bible. For example, it was thought that St. Mark the evangelist was the naked boy running away from the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus was arrested. In this sense, many ascribed Mary to be the unnamed adulteress Jesus saved from stoning. But in scripture there is no direct connection.

Thanks for the responses. Noli me tangere meaning "don't touch me" / "touch me not", is the Latin version of words spoken, according to John 20:17, by Jesus to Mary Magdalene when she recognizes him after his resurrection. Do you think Rizal tweaked the phrase in a passage of the Bible when he wrote the novel? If I read the author of the article correctly it seems that he was trying to establish that Maria Clara was not the epitome of modesty as he connects Maria Clara to Mary Magdalene.
What's your comment on this?
