It seems that way, but I won't give an affirmative, because I have not gone through this process. I decided instead to go the PhD route.

Make sure you have full funding. This means fellowship, Teaching assistant, research assistant, or other assistant ship. Any PhD program worth their salt will fund you fully.

Do not take any student loans for a PhD.

Thank you for your concern, but I graduate in a month, and found a job too.

How much money will you make once you have secured this advanced degree? How much more money will it be than if you didn't get the degree? You can't make this decision without doing what they call a cost benefit analyses. For example. If you currently make 50K and this degree will allow you to secure a job that gets you 70K a year, you could presumably pay the 85K student loan back in about than 5 years with your increased income, and is a no brainer. If the difference in pay is negligible though, I would seriously consider this as it may cost to get the education than what the education can actually get you.

Stay far away from student loans. They are not worth it. You will have MORE opportunities when you are not enslaved by debts that determine your decisions in life. You can take a wider variety of jobs when you have no debts rather than letting high pay be the one determining factor.

My student loans were the biggest mistake of my life. I will do everything in my power to make sure that my children will get the education they need without them. I don't care if they work at McDonalds flipping burgers until they are 30 before going to college as long as they can live their lives free of financial enslavement. I will tell them to strive for honest work, even if it isn't glamorous and then save their money so they can move to more desirable jobs over time.
