Because Israel will not roll over nor stick their head in the sand and without a Soviet Union protecting the other side under their MAD umbrella the US may get drawn in to protect their ally.

It boils down to oil. If Iran goes nuclear so do the other gulf states, and we have seen that they are as a group very unstable. A nuclear incident in that part of the world would cause a prolonged cut in oil supplies. Also it is very likely that some Islamist group would eventually get nukes and they would not hesitate to use them against the US or Israel.

For possibly the same reason the English were scared of france 2 centuries ago. They are unstable and anything could happen.

Since the US decided some time ago to go imperial, it has tried to do what every other imperial power has tried to do…impose stability. Iran has a ring of US bases around it, thanks to Al Qaida’s attack on the world trade center and Bush’s response. Iranians are nervous and want a MAD defense or at least a nuclear scar to keep the US from attacking. You may ask why, but the answer is easy enough. The US government has shown a propensity over these last few years to attack governments at will or destabilize them to effect regime change.

How ever there is another player who Iran keeps treatening another attempt at a final solution on. Thus the fear any Iran nukes will not lead to a cold war but a hot one.

We've been trained and conditioned to do so by a government (and a petro-industry) whose ongoing interest is in gaining control of as much of the petroleum-rich areas of the world as is feasible.

Of course, Iran, in protecting its own interests (staying free of foreign control and maintaining its own national security) has thrown fuel on the fire by its actions. They may be reasoning that having nukes will make other nations stay hands-off in regard to them, as with North Korea.

That's possible, but I think another possibility is much more likely. They may be playing a much deeper game.

I've heard it theorized that, while not actually pursuing nuclear weapons, they feel it's in their own interest to project the APPEARANCE of pursuing them (or at least the expertise involved) in order to create maximum political disunity within their enemy's camps, whether American or Israel, while gambling it won't come to a shooting war.

And, if it DOES come to a shooting war (they reason, according to this theory), they figure they'll be able to weather the storm, even if it ends in a US ground invasion. They'd counter this through attritive warfare, in which America eventually sickens of a bloody stalemate and withdraws. And (they reason) the political payoff in terms of their status in front of the whole Islamic world would make it worth it to weather such a storm. Vietnam provides them with the historical antecedent to such a viewpoint.

After such a dust-up, with American willingness to intervene again at an all-time low, they might figure that THEN is when they can truly pursue nuclear weaponry and get away with it.

I wouldn't put it past them to think in this kind of long-term way.
