Montreal (Eucharistically) EXPO-SED!
I wondered what good folk did there in the summer since their ball team left. I never imagined it was THIS good!
It's so unusual I don't know what to think of it. On the con side I can hear people might worry about irreverence or the mixing of the profane with the sacred. But if it begins and ends in Church (with those "joining" the procession then drawn into a closing Benediction, say); some of the worries go away. There are outdoor processions in Lourdes, France - though maybe not through the rough area of town.
I'm put in mind of the movie "Francis of Assissi" (1961) with Bradford Dillman as Francis and Delores Hart (later SISTER Delores Hart!) as St. Clare. In a conversion scene, young Francis, a bit tired of his wastrel life, steps outside of a tavern just as a Eucharistic procession passes by. He is moved. May it be so for some in Montreal.
Hopefully people will be more devoutly reverent at a procession than at a parade.
Devolving into competition with Carnivale in Rio, Pride Parades, or Mardi Gras in New Orleans wouldn't be good. Although a celebrational attitude accompanied by "When the Saints Go Marchin' In" might pass the comportment committee.
I'd like to see a procession on the feast of the Holy Innocents, or JUST before election day, perhaps combined with the Hispanic custom of Las Posadas (knocking at doors to ask if there is any room for Jesus - recalling the reception for unborn Jesus and his family in Bethlehem).
The procession for its own sake, and at any time, can still be a powerful witness to Jesus.
And proclaiming strongly for the unborn needn't be confrontational like the Orangemen in Northern Ireland marching through Catholic neighborhoods in a challenging, triumphal way.
But a Church in the closet only preaches to the choir.
