Can non-Catholics have a Catholic funeral?
My mother-in-law and father-in-law passed away (three years apart, but the ashes were saved for the first so now we have both). Neither was Catholic. In fact, they often did not speak well of Catholics and did not like that church or religion. They were never baptised. None of the family is catholic except for one grandson and his wife. She was raised Catholic and he converted shortly after they were married. She wants to have the mother- and father-in-law receive a Catholic funeral. Most of the family does not feel right about this and thinks it would be odd. I am wondering about the Catholic church's rules regarding this. Can they be given a Catholic funeral? I understand a priest could offer to provide the church, and that the rites may be different than those given to a Catholic. However, considering their dislike for the church and the fact that they never had any intention of being Catholic or baptized, wouldn't that make a difference? It seems to be going against what their wishes would be.
