Default Any good books or documentaries or movies on Catholic martyrs?

Hi,

I am looking for books or movies or documentaries on the martyrs of the Church. First of all, ask Jesus to help me find some good ones, and help me spread devotion to the martyrs. Also, I recommend everyone go to the theater to see "For Greater Glory". Also, ask for the prayers of Blessed Jose Sanchez for me to spread devotion to all the martyrs of the Church. And if you know of any books or hard copy video or audio media (I really don't like watching or reading things on the Internet, because it is more difficult to give copies to other people. I'd rather have a professionally produced high quality movie or documentary or feature film that I can watch together with someone or let them borrow).

If you know of anything like this, please let me know. Pray to St. Paul and St. Peter to help me find some good materials to evangelize with regarding teh heroic virtue and faith and supernatural love for Christ the martyrs had unto death. But I want materials that are specifically about martyrdom and martyrs, not simply individual saints who were martyrs, but the martyrs as a whole Communion and history.

Thank you for prayers and suggestions,
Joshua

The movie "For Greater Glory" is currently in theaters; it presents the Cristero years in revolutionary Mexico, a period of antireligious persecution that generated scores of martyrs. If it is showing in your town, by all means go and see it.

And be sure and stay for the final credits, as these fill in the background on many of the characters, who in actuality went on to beatification or canonization. This period was less than 90 years ago.

Yes, I watched it yesterday and it is the main reason I posted this thread. I regard it as one of the best movies I have ever seen. I went with two of my best friends.

Has the Pope or bishops written or said anything instructing us on how to deal with the possibility of martyrdom, either white or red?

Ignatius Press (http://www.ignatius.com/Products/Cat...11/Saints.aspx) has many movies about saints; our favorites are the ones from Italy.

For books, go to Blue Mantle Books (http://www.bluemantle.ca/shop-catholic.aspx) for a selection, or find a supplier of (for youth) Vision books, Windeatt books; or (for adults) Louis de Wohl is a good author!

'A Man for All Seasons'
This is a movie about St. Thomas More and his trials under the crown of Henry VIII of England. It won an Oscar for best picture in 1966. I find myself very drawn to St. Thomas More, even though I'm usually 'lawyer-averse.'

The movie "Becket" with Peter O'toole and Richard Burton is about the martyr Thomas a Becket.

There are several good movies on the life of St. Joan of Arc.

You might also read "The Martyrdom of Polycarp." Very edifying. Available online.

I think the latest teaching on that came from our LORD but I could be wrong.

Martyrdom conditions are most often limited in place and time; many places go for generations without an occasion of martyrdom appearing, so the need to teach about it has been limited.

Thumbs up Re: Any good books or documentaries or movies on Catholic martyrs?

'There be Dragons' is an extremely good movie about the life of St. Jose Maria Escriva.
