Do you believe the Flood was a historical event? - Page 17

Every major world religion mentions something about a flood, so I'm inclined to believe that there was some major flood event. It might not have been literally the whole globe, but it must have been a pretty significant flood.

It is not my logic, but Catholic doctrine you seem to find dicey, for we must accept the Ten Commandments, yet are not required to accept a worldwide flood.

I think you are missing my point. You said there are certain things that are doctrine and that is true. There are large numbers (and I have seen them on this forum) that put the parting of the Red Sea in with the "mythological" notion of Noahs Ark and the flood.

My point is you are required to accept the ten commandments but many do not accept an intrical part of that story which is the Red Sea parting. So ,some believe the ten commandements were given but what took place with the man who received them is not plausable. That's a bad fit. Noah was spoken of as an actual person, even by Jesus. The flood being false but the signifigance of Noah being real is another odd belief. I apologize if I made any assuptions on your part.

If it was the whole globe, those cultures would not have been around to write about the flood they saw.

Noah's descendants that separated and went their way could be those cultures. The story was handed down from survivors of the flood to the following generations.

On the other hand, if the flood was local, how did cultures distant from the flood know about it?

I suggest looking up the dates of these various flood reports sometime. Some of them are just a few years or even less, from the estimated time of the great flood. It's true that Noah's descendants could have spread out and retold the great flood story for years to come, but there's no way that there were entire settlements on the other side of the planet with these stories even just 10 years after the flood.
