Yes, it was Thomas Merton. At the time the Trappists maintained their French customs and called the monks Dom. He was Dom Louis. Later they changed to English and he became Brother Louis. He was named after St. Louis King of France, maybe because he was a Frenchman himself.

Actually, if you want to be a secular brother, you can commute and you're not too far either.
