Trust me. You will go through periods where even you don't understand you. How could you expect your future husband to understand when he doesn't have the disease that we have.
I have been diagnosed for 12 years now and still do not realize when I am entering a major depressive episode until it is well under way and too late to pull out of. My therapist has encouraged me to spot my triggers and proactively change my thinking in order to head off the depression. My wife of 21 years is sometimes more perceptive that am I about my moods. She has in fact told me point blank: "You need to talk to your doctor" when my mood is off. I know her well enough to know that her perceptions of me are accurate and her advice needs to be followed. This only comes after significant time spent dealing with my bipolar illness as a team. Even though it has been 12 years, we are still occasionally thrown for a loop. The disease keeps morphing into more and more powerful forms and must be met and conquered in different ways that are also morphing continuously. Medications must be constantly tweaked and changed to stay one step ahead of our adversary. Behavior modification is also an important tool in the battle against bipolar illness. Don't be too hard on your fiance. Just encourage him to read everything he can on the illness. Encourage him to attend your appointments with you if you are comfortable with that. Encourage him to provide you with feedback about your moods as this can enable you to head off problems before they are full-blown depression or mania. Good luck and God bless you. You will find your way with prayer.

I know its been a long time since I posted! I am very thankful to go back and read these old messages. God bless all of you! After about 6 months of not practicing I returned to mass. I started reading some of my old RCIA books and practicing my faith. I have discovered many things...some good...some bad....but I realize that I AM CATHOLIC. And that I always will be. No one can take my faith away from me. So all you out there who deal with mental illness.....you may have difficulties...BUT the one thing NO ONE CAN TAKE FROM YOU is your FAITH! No one can take your love of God from you. I dont know about you but that made a great deal of difference to me. God Bless You!
