I agree, the bugle seems to have disappeared around the time Patrick introduced his now favorite phrase “ CALL SPRAWL”, which I find hideous, especially when dealing with people who are struggling to ask a question about some personally sensitive issue.

Just for the sake of information, I listened to two random episodes of CAL on which Jimmy Akin was the guest apologist.
July 3, 2008, with Jerry Usher.
June 7, 2012, with Patrick Coffin.
Jerry was a kindly gentleman, and a gracious host; he was humble, and he exhumed a professional, intelligent air. When Patrick Coffin arrived, I'm sorry to say the entire ambiance and presence of the show went off in a completely different direction, maybe even towards crass edutainment.
I'm pleased the "trumpet blast of love" has been taken off of the show; and I sincerely wish the consistent one-liners and near insulting jokes -- Jimmy Akin is addicted to brake fluid!!! nyuk-nyuk-nyuk --- would follow.

I have CAL episodes from the beginning to 2010 if you're interested...

Re: What happened to first-time caller "bugle" greeting?
I would imagine the trumpet blast is gone because Patrick is on the road more often now and the fill-in host can't be expected to imitate it (I have no idea how a human can make that sound in the first place), so some first time callers end up disappointed.
I personally like Patrick's style and I look forward to the banter between him and Jimmy, including attempts at humor that sometimes fall flat (which is humorous in itself). It's like opening the windows and letting some fresh air in.
Having said that, I do prefer Fr. Mitch Pacwa's way of handling callers who go on forever. He doesn't seem to be concerned that other callers are waiting on the line. It means less calls per show, but there is less tension.

If anything is obnoxious it is some of Patrick's banter and especially with Jimmy. I'd rather they drop the banter and keep the bugle.

I actually agree with both of you. I thought it was a bit obnoxious, and yet cute. One thing, however, is that it often caught truly new listeners way off guard, so perhaps it operated as a bit of a deterrence to future listening.

How very true.
I love Catholic Answers, which I listen to on my Iphone, but I pick and choose the programs I listen to via podcast so I probably omit at least 1/3 or more of them. I only listen to the Q&A ones that feature Jimmy Akin or Patrick Madrid.
One thing I'd note, and I'd note that I do like this show, is that I feel that the Q&A shows could benefit by being less concerned with keeping all the answers short. If the answers were two to three times their average length, they still wouldn't be long. I worry that sometimes Patrick C, and Patrick M, are a little quick to cut answers off which comes across, I'm afraid, as a little aggressive or a little evasive. Akin in particular is capable of giving intensely in depth reasoned answers, and I'd really like it if he was given more time to respond to each one. If that meant 1/3 less callers, so be it. If people are cut off, I fear that they feel their question was avoided. I know that is not the case, and I know that Patrick C must be concerned about moving the show along, but still, the show should be careful about that.
I would also note that I'm not including, in that, the run on questions that some people will have. About 5% of the questions do, indeed, feature call sprawl, as the caller goes on and on without being able to form a question or even keep on a singular topic. FWIW, that's very common in average speech and I'll frequently see it in testimony situations.
